Who you gonna call? Duct Cleaners!

The Power Vac America team was called out to clean up after an electrical fire at a nearby fitness center. The center had just installed brand new Carrier units over the summer, and they wanted to get the units cleaned of the soot and fire retardant before they turned the units back on. After all, the last thing you want while you're working out is to be breathing contaminated air!

We were in and out in a day, and the fitness center and their clients will be breathing much easier!

Seven Signs That You Need Your Ducts Cleaned

How do you know if you need to clean your ducts?  Dirty ducts are usually an "invisible" problem; often you can't see that you need to have them cleaned because they are hidden in your attic or in the ceiling of your office.  But if you are having indoor allergies or respiratory problems whenever you are in your home or office, and you don't experience these problems when you are other places, your body is trying to tell you that there is something wrong in your environment.

7 Signs that you need your ducts cleaned:

1. Odors
If your house has a persistent musty or "mildewy" smell, it's possible that you have fungal and/or bacterial growth in your hvac system.  Here is a picture from a recent apartment complex with fungal growth in the ductwork:

For more information on odor and fungal growth, read about our IAQ Assessments.

2. Visible mold growth
Sometimes the fungal growth in the hvac system is so pervasive that it literally begins to climb out of the air conditioning system and into your home.  This is a sure-fire sign that you need to have your ducts cleaned.  It's important to note that this fungal growth can't be solved by simply cleaning the outside of the vents.  The inside of the ductwork is going to be just as infected.  Power Vac America's solution will be to treat the whole system with an antifungal, anti-microbial coating that is registered with the EPA for use in ductwork.

Check out our article on the life cycle of a mold spore here:  Life Cycle of a Mold Spore.

3. Excess Dust
Are you constantly dusting the same furniture again and again?  It's possible that your hvac system is responsible for your extra housework!  If your ductwork is is filled with dust, the air flying through your ductwork is picking up that dust and depositing it on your kitchen counters, on your shelves, creating a fine layer of dust over your cup of coffee in the morning-- yuck!

Read about our five point cleaning system.

4. Debris blowing out of vents
If you walk in to your office in the morning and there are small to large globs of dirt and debris that have fallen out of the vents and onto your desk, you probably need to have your ductwork cleaned.  Especially common in older commercial buildings, the debris is usually the result of deteriorating insulation.  Ductwork in commercial buildings is often lined with fiberglass insulation, so that the cold air stays cold as it moves from the A/C unit to your office, and also to help keep the noise from the A/C system down.  Over time, the insulation can deteriorate, especially if it is infected with mold.

A NADCA certified duct cleaner like Power Vac America can either: 1) treat the insulation with an anti-fungal/anti-microbial coating, 2) remove the insulation and re-insulate the ductwork, or 3) seal the insulation down with a sealant for internally-lined ductwork.

5. Allergies and respiratory problems
Your home or office may be making you sick.  If you notice that you feel ill or your sinuses start acting up whenever you are in your home or office, you probably need to have your HVAC system checked.  Especially for groups who are more sensitive to irritants in the environment, such as babies, people who are already suffering from an illness, and the elderly, it's important to ensure that the air in your environment is not making you sicker.

Besides mold, another allergy irritant frequently found in ductwork is pet dander.  Even if you do not own a pet, if the previous owners of your home had a dog or cat then you may be suffering from allergies from residual pet dander that is entering the air in your home every time you turn on your A/C.

Read more on the health effects of poor indoor air quality on our website.

6. Construction Dust
With the near year-round heat of Houston, chances are good that your A/C will still be running during any construction or renovation projects going on in your home or office.  If that construction dust stays in your HVAC system, it can become "food" for mold and fungal growth later on.  Furthermore, construction dust also contributes to many of the above-mentioned symptoms of dirt ducts, such as excess dust in your home or allergy and respiratory problems.

Even if you have a filter in place during the construction job, in most cases we suggest cleaning the ductwork post-construction, as the heavy influx of particles in the air during the construction or renovation project means that it is likely that at least some of the dust bypassed the filter.  Excess dust makes your A/C system work extra hard and, especially during the summer months when our systems are working overtime anyway, can cause the HVAC system to break down under the extra work load.  The last thing you want is for your A/C system to break during the heat of Houston!

 7. Moving into an older "new" house
If you buy an older home, we recommend that you have the ducts cleaned.    Just like you wouldn't use the previous owners toothbrush, you shouldn't breath the previous owner's air.  Especially if the previous owners were smokers or pet owners, it is important to have the HVAC system thoroughly cleaned and treated.  Materials that can accumulate in ductwork over the lifetime of a homeowner include: pet dander, human hair, human skin cells, pollen, dust mite parts, and mold and other fungal infections.
